Mitchell wrestling team drops dual to Yankton

After dropping a 46-27 dual to Yankton, Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said his team will go back to work.

Mitchell is now 1-5 in head-to-head duals.

“We didn’t wrestle well, but that was the first match after Christmas and we’ll move forward,” Carpenter said.

The Kernels got off to a rough start, dropping their first three matches to fall behind 15-0.

“We lost of three of four matches we could’ve won, and that cost us the dual,” Carpenter said. “Those are three swing matches by three kids who have a lot of varsity experience, and we just didn’t get it done.”

Mitchell got on the board when Tanner Vilhauer pinned Gabe Wenzlaff in a 126-pound matchup. Ethan Parr defeated Mason Strahl 7-5 in an overtime matchup at the 138-pound weight class to bring the Kernels within nine points.

“At the beginning, I wasn’t having the fight I needed to have, but once I got down I really started looking at what I needed to do and tried my hardest,” Parr said.

After Parr’s close victory, Mitchell dropped another match by fall. The Kernels lost a total of five matches by fall. Three of those five came consecutively in the 170-, 182- and 195-pound weight classes.

Mitchell answered with back-to-back pins of its own in the 220- and 285-pound matches by Riley Heck and Robert McCardle, but it was too late. Yankton put too much distance between the two teams.

“I think we should have won this dual, but a lot of us weren’t feeling it in the beginning,” Parr said.
