WAGNER — The Parkston wrestling team proved pins are critical to winning any dual.
The Trojans won five matches by pin en route to winning the dual 46-22 Thursday in Wagner.
“For the most part we wrestled pretty tough, but we have to keep improving,” said Parkston head coach Jared Digmann, whose team is ranked No. 1 in the state. “In a dual meet, it’s big to be able to get pins. Two decisions are the same as a pin, so you can get up two matches by pinning the guy in one match.”
The Trojans jumped out to an early 22-0 lead after winning the first four matches, three of which came by pin. Wagner finally got on the board after Nick Dion defeated Cameron Fanning 4-2 in a 132-pound match.
Parkston wrestler Myles Bialas answered Dion’s win on points in the next match by pinning Wagner’s Sineway Marshall in the first minute of the first period.
“I thought I could have wrestled a little better, but I got the pin and that’s what my team asked me to do,” said Bialas, who has 12 wins on the season, all by pins. “There are always things to work on to get better. Our coach is always pushing us to be perfect, so that’s what I always strive to do.”
After Bialas’ victory, Wagner went on a four-match win streak to close the once 25-point lead to 34-22.
“Regardless of what the team score is, we have a job to do and the guys in the middle of our lineup did an excellent
job,” Wagner head coach Chas Welch said.
The Red Raiders streak was highlighted by its only pin of the night when Trevor Lensing bested Lonn Stadlman in a 182-pound matchup.
“We knew coming in that Parkston was going to be one of the better teams in the state,” Welch said.
Both teams are back in action Saturday at the Southeastern South Dakota conference tourney in Chamberlain.
