Man falls asleep, injured in crash near Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA — A Mitchell man was injured during a Tuesday morning accident near Alexandria.

South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Micheal Peterson said Austin Sindt, 20, was traveling west on Interstate 90 when he fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle at 8 a.m. about three miles west of Alexandria.

Peterson said Sindt went into the north ditch and rolled the 1992 Ford Tempo he was driving twice, and then it went through a barbed wire fence and rolled a third time before coming to a stop in a pasture.

He was transported by ambulance to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Peterson said Sindt was cited for careless driving and for not wearing a seat belt.

The Highway Patrol was assisted by the Hanson County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell Fire and Ambulance and the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department.
