PARKSTON — Parkston guard/forward Erica Herrold was playing with a cold, but that did not cool her down on the court.
The 6-foot senior scored 15 points and grabbed an amazing 24 rebounds to record a double-double.
“I just want to thank my teammates for my performance because they are really who help me do what I do on the court,” Herrold said.
Herrold’s performance helped lift Parkston to a 47-25 victory over Dell Rapids at the Parkston girls’ basketball classic.
“She wasn’t feeling well, but she is a kid that is a very capable young lady and a good basketball player offensively and defensively,” Parkston head coach Rob VanLaecken said. “I thought she played great for being sick.”
Parkston’s Alexis Horstman also reached double figures in the scoring department with 10 points, while Krista Radke pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out two assists.
The Parkston defense stymied the Dell Rapids offense, forcing turnover after turnover with its press.
Dell Rapids (2-4) was led by Nikki Rice, who scored five points and Rachel Devlin who added four.
“We were on defense every day in practice,” Herrold said. “We played a lot better defense and we were more intense.”
The Trojans (6-1) jumped out to an early 13-6 lead in the first quarter of the game. Despite its rough offensive night Parkston, which never trailed in the ball game, methodically cruised to the win.
