There will be a rematch of the 2011 and 2012 Class AA state boys’ basketball championship games tonight.
The Mitchell Kernels face the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Knights, who are the reigning three-time state champion, at 4 p.m. today during the Mike Miller Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
For some, the anticipation of the game is high with the teams’ rivalry within the past two years. But for head coach Tom Young, it’s nothing unusual.
“For us this is just another game,” said Young, whose team is 2-5. “We need to win no matter who our opponent is.”
Both schools have new groups of players this season with successful programs. One variable may swing the Kernels’ way — the home crowd.
“The loyalty of Kernel fans is great and there is always a good following,” Young said. “I am really looking forward to it, and I think the kids are as well.”
Young said he thought his team took another step forward in Thursday’s game against Coronado, of Henderson, Nev.
“I thought we created a lot of open shots from our penetration, but we need to make a lot more of those shots,” he said. “We’re capable of shooting better.”
The Kernels shot 39 percent in the 80-63 loss but had four players score in double figures with senior guard Cole Morgan leading the way with 16 points.
The Knights are 2-3 on the season. O’Gorman coach and Mitchell native Derek Robey could not be reached for comments on this report.
