LETTER: Compassion, friends can help the ‘troubled’

The gun situation needs to be addressed, but let us lay it aside for a moment.
We have many troubled people in our midst, be it physical, psychological or spiritual, maybe being bullied, mistreated at home, lonely, afraid or ill. What we need to do is offer help: Talk with them, encourage them. Be a friend.
One of the parents of a victim in Connecticut told of his son, who did just that. He saw someone all by himself in a group and joined in and befriended him.
All that many may need is just a helping hand, a kind word, a smile, a little companionship.
Let us all try to be more compassionate where someone could apparently need help. This could help prevent violence, and maybe save lives. Let us reach out and give it a try.
