Q. It said in The Daily Republic that outgoing County Commissioner Jerry Fischer will remain on the Local Emergency Planning Committee after he leaves office at the end of the month. How can he stay on the LEPC if he leaves the commission?

A. Davison County Emergency Management Director Jim Montgomery said Fischer is the chairman of the LEPC, which includes about 30 members. It’s the LEPC’s job to plan responses to potential disasters or emergencies. The board — which meets at 10:30 a.m. on the second Wednesday of every month — is composed of citizens, businesspeople, city and county officials, educators, health-care workers, clergy, and representatives of organizations such as the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

Fischer, Montgomery said, can stay on the board as a citizen representative after he leaves the County Commission next month.

Even though Fischer may remain on the LEPC, he will no longer be the County Commission’s representative to the LEPC. The commissioners will have to appoint another commissioner to the committee.
