The Mitchell area is in a winter weather advisory that stretches across the southeastern part of the state.

Widespread snow is expected over the area today and tonight as a storm approaches from the southwest, according to the National Weather Service.

Heavy snow is not expected, but a steady snow with accumulations of 2 to 5 inches is forecast. The threat of accumulations of 4 to 5 inches will be mainly near and south of Interstate 90, the weather service said.

Winds will not be strong with this snow, so the biggest problem will be slippery surfaces and visibility reduction to a little less than a mile at times during the snowfall.

The snow should end late tonight or Friday.
