Winter is when many high school seniors in South Dakota begin making solid plans for college. South Dakota Magazine offers assistance with a feature in its January/February 2013 issue on the many exciting research projects happening at our colleges and universities.

At Dakota Wesleyan University, English professor Derek Driedger and his students noticed a disconnect between 19th century literature written about Dakota Territory and the reality of life on the Plains. That led the professor to scour archived newspapers to find the root of the discrepancies. Writer John Andrews explains what Driedger’s unearthed and how it impacted settlement in Dakota Territory and impressions the frontier created among readers, especially on the East Coast.

South Dakota Magazine is published in Yankton. It explores the history, arts, culture, sports and outdoors of the state.
