‘Bud’ Steffen, White Lake

Lester A. “Bud” Steffen, 90, White Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at Platte Care Center.

He was born on March 18, 1922.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, White Lake. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, south of White Lake.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.

Lester Arthur Steffen was born to Otto and Emma (Kettlehut) Steffen at White Lake.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural White Lake.

He attended St. John’s Christian grade school, high school in White Lake and Stickney and graduated from Canistota High School in 1940.

He farmed all his life on the family farm south of White Lake. He held many offices in the Trinity Lutheran Church of White Lake, served as a school board member, was the Gales Township treasurer for many years, served on the Aurora County weed board, was a sexton for the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, served on the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home board and was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He married Yvonne Walz at Redeemer Lutheran Church of Armour on Feb. 11, 1956. To this union were born five children.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne, of 56 years; his daughter, Barbara (Ron) Bell, Sioux Falls; sons: Ronald (Dona) Steffen, White Lake; Bruce (Cindy) Steffen, Bridgewater, Mass.; and Douglas, Sioux Falls; his sisters: Helen (Jerry) Allen and Florence Jakeman, Hemet, Calif.; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Joan (Lee) Lyman, Sandpoint, Idaho; Gleni (John) McQuade, San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; Elly McMullen, Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren: Ross and Rachel Bell, Kristen and Kelli Steffen and Tara and Joshua Steffen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Richard, sisters: Leone (John) Schlueter, Alvina (George) Stahr, Donna (Arnold) Jensen, and Agnes (Maynard) Grapentine; and brothers: Wilmer (Suzy and Marion) Steffen and Leonard Steffen.
