Watertown man dies in accident near Wagner

WAGNER — A Watertown man died Thursday in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of South Dakota Highways 46 and 37, 16 miles east of Wagner.

WAGNER — A Watertown man died Thursday in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of South Dakota Highways 46 and 37, 16 miles east of Wagner.

Jacob Joseph Burke, 23, was driving a 2008 Dodge 3500 west on Highway 46. He failed to stop at the intersection stop sign and struck a 2009 Freightliner truck traveling south on Highway 37.

David Richard Hecht, 51, of South Sioux City, Neb., was driving the Freightliner.

Burke, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. Hecht was wearing a seatbelt. He was transported to Avera St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall for possible injuries.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Bon Homme County Sheriff’s Office, Avon Fire and Ambulance and Tyndall Ambulance assisted.
