Catching up: Parkston native Maxwell scores 19 in USF's first-ever win over Concordia

Former Parkston standout David Maxwell led the University of Sioux Falls men’s basketball team to its first-ever Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win over Concordia University- St. Paul on Friday.
Maxwell, a senior for the Cougars, scored 19 points in the 77-68 victory, 14 of which came in the second half. He also added six rebounds.
USF (5-4 overall, 1-4 NSIC) tips off again Jan. 4 when it travels to Upper Iowa University for a conference matchup. The Cougars return home to face off against Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 11 in the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls.
n Mitchell graduate Kendra Knight got off to a quick start in the 2012-13 indoor track season with a second-place finish in the women’s 400 meter dash at the Mankato Preseason Open on Dec. 8 for the University of Sioux Falls.
Knight, a junior for the Cougars, ran a 58.53 in the event, just 0.04 seconds from first. Knight also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that finished in third at the meet. USF resumes its season Jan. 12 when it travels to Sioux Center, Iowa, for the Dordt College Indoor Mini Meet.
n Avon native Kela Cihak is averaging 10 points and five rebounds and is leading the team in assists at 2.69 per game 13 games into the season for the Briar Cliff University women’s basketball team.
Cihak, a senior, averaged 18 points and 4.5 rebounds for the Chargers last week as they went 1-1 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play. Briar Cliff is off to an 11-2 record and 5-2 in the GPAC. The Chargers are ranked No. 6 nationally in the NAIA.
n Dakota State University senior and Mitchell High graduate Stephanie Uher finished fifth in the finals of the women’s 600-meter run at the Mankato Preseason Open with a time of 1:43.17. Uher also anchored the Trojans’ 4x400m relay team that finished sixth. DSU continues its season Jan.12 at Dordt College.
n Hanson graduate Bethany Gross was the top collegiate finisher in the 500-meter run, finishing second overall in the Air Force Holiday Open Dec. 7.
Gross, a senior for Air Force, finished with a time of 1 minute, 17.23 seconds and was one of two top-five finishers for Air Force in the event. The Falcons return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they host the annual Air Force All-Comers Meet at the Academy’s Cadet Field House.
n Robert Kokesh continues to dominate the mat for No.14 Nebraska as he won his 11th consecutive match on Dec.16 at Madison Square Garden. Kokesh, a former Wagner Red Raider, is currently ranked eighth in the country in his sophomore season for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska competes again on Dec.29 in Evanston, Ill., at the Midlands Invitational.
