Pierre teen shot dead identified; second teen faces murder charge

Dalton Williams of Pierre was killed about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday; three teens were on the scene when police arrived.

PIERRE (AP) — Police in Pierre say one 16-year-old boy has been killed and another has been taken into custody after a shooting in the city.

Police Chief Bob Grandpre says Dalton Williams of Pierre was killed about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday from what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

Grandpre says three 16-year-old boys were on scene when they arrived. One of them faces charges of first-degree murder and is being held in the Hughes County Shelter Facility.

Authorities have determined it was an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the public. No motive was given.

Williams was a sophomore at Riggs High School in Pierre.

Grandpre says law enforcement officers, Pierre School District personnel, and representatives from the mental health community are providing support to the schools and community.
