LETTER: Freedom in a modern society isn’t unlimited
What is freedom? It is freedom to do whatever you wish without interference.By: John Zilverberg , Highmore
To the Editor:
Freedom: There’s a lot of talk about freedom these days.
What is freedom? It is freedom to do whatever you wish without interference.
But in a modern society you cannot have freedom to do whatever you wish.
You cannot have the freedom to shoot your neighbor just because you don’t like him or even beat him up, steal his property or cheat him out of his money.
In this modern society your freedom is very limited. In a modern society we have to have laws and regulations and we have the police, the FBI, Army, Navy and Marines to enforce them.
In this country, we have freedom of religion. But that is also limited.
We cannot have freedom of a religion that conflicts with our laws or allows you to kill someone just because his faith is different than yours or beat up or even kill your wife if she doesn’t confirm with your beliefs.
Clean renewable energy: I see where Germany is producing more power from solar energy than could be produced by four nuclear power plants. That is clean, renewable energy and if we do not have the know-how to do that, we better send someone over to Germany to learn how.
