To the Editor:

Recent news briefs from South Dakota show Gov. Dennis Daugaard announcing federal grants to South Dakota for a variety of recreational trail projects totaling $1.5 million and another $1.7 million for various community projects around the state.

Earlier this year, there was the $1.7 million for the new bike/walking trail in Pierre. That totals almost $5 million. Then add how many million dollars in federal grant and stimulus received by South Dakota communities that I’m not aware of.

Then add the billions of dollars in federal grants to the other 49 states. Then add the billions of dollars in “earmarks” to the states so our congressmen can brag about “bringing home the bacon.”

POINT: And Americans can’t figure out why the U.S. is more than $16 trillion in debt? Give me a break.

We’ve done it to ourselves by demanding that Uncle Santa provide all our goodies. Well, he’s “keeping a list,” he’s “checking it twice,” and the bill is past due. Enjoy your walk and bike ride.
