Two SD women in top five in barrel racing at WNFR
South Dakota residents Lisa Lockhart and Nikki Steffes are in fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the barrel racing event at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nev., through seven go-rounds. Barrel racing goes 10 rounds and is one of eight events at the WNFR, also known as the Super Bowl of rodeo.

Lockhart, of Oelrichs, has an average score of 102.68. Her last two rounds she’s landed in third place on the day with her best time being 13.79 seconds. The leader in the barrel racing event is averaging a score of 97.73.
Steffes, of Vale, has an average score of 104.43. Her best daily finish was sixth, coming on the second round. Her best time in the event was 14.03 seconds.
Five South Dakota cowboys are competing at the WNFR.
In the saddle bronc, Faith’s Cole Elshere is in seventh place through seven rounds. He won the fifth round with a score of 83. He’s also finished in fourth and sixth.
Another Oelrichs resident, Chad Ferley is competing in the saddle bronc and is in 14th place. His best daily finish was sixth place, which came in the seventh round. There are three more rounds before the event is concluded.
Hermosa’s Todd Suhn is in 11th in the steer wrestling, but he claimed a first-place finish in the seventh round with a time of 4.3 seconds. He’s placed in the top six three times.
In bull riding, Timber Lake’s Ardie Maier is in 13th place out of 15 contestants. His best individual daily finish was the fourth round in second place with a score or 76.
