Pine Ridge opens center for elderly residents

The Porcupine District Elderly Building has come a long way from a year ago when the elderly meal program was nearly terminated.

PORCUPINE (AP) — A building dedicated to seniors on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation has opened.

District Center Manager Paul John Iron Cloud tells the media that the Porcupine District Elderly Building has come a long way from a year ago when the elderly meal program was nearly terminated.

Iron Cloud says that when he first came into the job, officials handed him a paper saying they were going to shut him down because he didn't have a building.

He turned to the community for help. The district donated $100,000, Oglala Lakota College donated windows and labor and the Housing Authority donated sheet rock and labor.

Resident Yvonne DeCory says the center is an example of what the Sioux Nation can do when it comes together as a people.
