MOUNT VERNON: Students participate in state oral interp

Alaina Bertsch and Bobbi Beach Pattison represented Mount Vernon High School at the State Oral Interp Contest and Beach Pattison received a superior on his oratory piece.
A reminder that author Jean Patrick will be visiting the Mount Vernon School at 10:15 a.m. Dec. 21 in the Tom Young Community Center.
Her presentation is called “Jackie Mitchell, The Girl Who Struck Out Babe Ruth.” Jean will be presenting based on the following information.
On March 28, 193l, 17-yearold Jackie Mitchell signed a contract to play baseball for the Chattanooga Lookouts, a Class AA minor league team. Five days later on April 2, 1931, Jackie pitched against the New York Yankees in an exhibition game. In front of 4,000 fans, she struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Mount Vernon, will have a soup and sandwich supper from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 20.
Activities for the week of Dec. 10-17:
Today, the Mount Vernon-Plankinton Titans girls’ basketball team will host Ethan in Mount Vernon with a junior high game at 5:15 p.m., a JV game at 6:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 8 p.m.
Tuesday, the Titans boys’ basketball team will travel to Ethan with a junior high game at 5:15 p.m., a JV game at 6:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 8 p.m.
Thursday, the boys’ basketball team will travel to Bon Homme High School with a C game at 4 p.m., a JV game at 5:15 p.m. and the varsity game at 8 p.m. The Titans girls’ basketball team will travel to Emery to play Bridgewater-Emery with a JV game at 6:30 p.m. followed by a varsity game at 8 p.m.
Friday will be an SESD Day. The 7-12 Winter Concert will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Tom Young Community Center.
Saturday there will be a boys’ basketball JV tournament beginning at 9 a.m. at McCook Central High School. The Titans varsity wrestling team will participate in the Titan Invitational at 9:30 a.m. in Plankinton.
There will be a girls’ junior high basketball game with Wessington Springs in Mount Vernon at 10 a.m. with the boys’ junior high game beginning at 11:15 a.m.
The benefit auction for Hunter Bork will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the downtown gym.
Dec. 17, the K-6 winter concert will be at 7 p.m. in the Tom Young Community Center.
Mount Vernon Youth Wrestling practice started Dec. 6. And will have practices on Dec. 13, 20 and 27. Starting in January, practices will be Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the old gym on Main Street for boys and girls ages 5-14 (age they will be in the year 2013.)
