SIOUX FALLS (AP) — Volunteers in South Dakota’s largest city gathered on a wintry day to make blankets for the homeless.

Officials say the seventh annual Project Warm-Up held Saturday at a Sioux Falls middle school produced about 1,200 fleece wraps. The blankets will be distributed throughout the city. Project founder Kaitlin Vik says more than 400 people showed up to help. She says the first event six years ago drew 20 volunteers.

Vik said residents don’t realize the amount of homeless people who live in the Sioux Falls area.

Says Vik, “It’s shocking to me.”
