RAPID CITY — The Mitchell wrestling team had three place in the Rapid City Invitational Saturday.
The invite was a two-day tournament, consisting of 35 teams from five states.
“When you get into a 35-team tournament, the second day is going to be tough because it’s the best of the best,” Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said. “We could’ve maybe won a few more matches, but we had a couple mistakes in the end.”
Mitchell’s Ethan Parr (138) took seventh place, Matt Larson (145) took eighth place and Robert McCardle (285) finished the tournament in eighth place.
“I’m really pleased with Ethan,” Carpenter said of the first year varsity wrestler. “He goes out and keeps battling and comes out with wins.”
Parr went 5-1 in the tournament and Larson and McCardle were 4-2.
Alex Herrick (132) and Trey Hohn (120) suffered losses in the first round Saturday, which ended their runs. Each wrestler went 3-2 in the tourney.
Carpenter said the team took a lot in from the experience.
“It’s a matter of being a little more physical and working for every point,” he said.
The Kernels are back in action Thursday when they host Aberdeen at 7:30 p.m. at the Mitchell High School.
