Area girls' and boys' basketball roundup: WiLdKats win season opener over Titans

WHITE LAKE — The Kimball/White Lake boys’ basketball team opened its season with a 59-56 win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton Saturday in White Lake.

WHITE LAKE — The Kimball/White Lake boys’ basketball team opened its season with a 59-56 win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton Saturday in White Lake.

Jesse Taylor led the WiLdKat offense with a game-high 17 points. Jacob Kirsch had 14 points and Kyle Peters added nine for KWL, which shot 43.9 percent from the field. Taylor and Kirsch also led the WiLdKats in assists with three apiece.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton dominated the boards, finishing with 38 to KWL’s 17. Cote Hinker was the game’s leading rebounder with 11.

Jared Long led the Titans in scoring with 16 points. Kellam Karst was not far behind with 15 and Deric Denning added 13.

Kimball/White Lake (1-0) plays Mitchell Christian Thursday in Mitchell. MVP (0-1) travels to Ethan Tuesday.

Platte-Geddes 45, Dakota Christian 35

NEW HOLLAND — Hunter Johnson recorded a double-double to help lift Platte-Geddes to a 10-point victory over Dakota Christian Saturday.

Johnson tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds for Platte-Geddes. Richard Sternberg scored a game-high 13 points and added four assists.

The Black Panthers shot 33 percent from the field and finished with 38 total rebounds, 10 of which were recorded by Matthew Randall.

Dakota Christian was led by Carter Dykstra, who recorded a team-high nine points and added seven rebounds. Darren Fallis and Jake Spoelstra each scored eight points.

Platte-Geddes (1-0) plays Andes Central today in Lake Andes. Dakota Christian (0-1) returns to action Thursday when they travel to Ethan.

MENNO — Austin Barlow scored 21 points in Tripp-Delmont/Armour’s 48-37 victory over Menno Saturday.

Barlow also had nine rebounds. Shane Koster and Trevor Payer recorded 10 points apiece for the Nighthawks, who also won the JV game.

Menno was led by Austin Herrboldt and Dustin Lehr, who tallied 10 points apiece.

WOONSOCKET — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket kicked off its season with a 21-point win over Sunshine Bible Academy Saturday.

Three SCW players scored in double figures. Nick Miller led all scorers with 19 points, while Davion Brooks scored 13 and Drew Hinker added 10.

SCW shot 46 percent from the field, while SBA shot 30.

The Crusaders were led by Brady Brockel, who finished with a double-double. Brockel had a game-high 18 rebounds and 10 points. Chibueze Egeruoh also scored 10 points and tallied nine rebounds.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket plays Tripp-Delmont/Armour Thursday in Armour. SBA (0-1) takes on Faulkton Area Tuesday in Faulkton.

MONTROSE — Brandon Reif scored 19 points and six rebounds in McCook Central/Montrose’s 67-47 victory over Parker in high school boys’ basketball action Saturday.

Zach Bies scored 16 points, Will Gottlob had 12 points and Jake Heumiller added 10. MCM, who also won the JV game, shot 56 percent from the field, while Parker shot 36 percent.

Parker was led by Jake Anderson, who had 15 points in the loss.

AVON — Noah St. Pierre scored 26 points and 10 rebounds in Wagner’s 62-37 victory over Avon Saturday.

Wagner’s Chris Kuca recorded 15 points for the Red Raiders. Wagner shot 46 percent from the field and outrebounded Avon 34-28.

Avon was led by Brandon Kocmich, who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Logan Mudder also had 10 rebounds in the game. Avon shot 30 percent from the field.

ALEXANDRIA — Hanson’s Jordan Marquardt made eight 3-pointers, breaking a school record, in Hanson’s 84-76 victory over Ethan Saturday.

There were 24 three-point baskets in the game.

Marquardt had 33 points, seven assists and seven rebounds in the win. Sam Vander Stouwe had 17 points, Tyler Pringle added 13, Matt Huber recorded 11 and Trey Person racked up 10.

The Beavers were 27-of-48 from the field, while Ethan was 35-of-80 from the field.

Hanson, which won the JV game 34-26, had 25 rebounds to Ethan’s 30.

The Rustlers were led by Blake Bartscher with 29 points and nine assists. Colton Bierle had 15 points, Jace Conner added 13 points, Anthony Huber had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Ariana Oorlog led Avon with 11 points and five rebounds. Chesney Nagel and Heidi Cap each added six points in the loss.
