STICKNEY — A 14-year-old Stickney girl suffered minor injuries in a one-vehicle accident Friday morning.

Bayleann Cooper was driving her 1997 GMC Jimmy northbound on U.S. Highway 281 about three miles north of Stickney at around 7:30 a.m. when the vehicle drifted to the east side of the road, according to South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Aaron Hanson. Cooper’s vehicle drifted onto the highway shoulder, and then she tried to steer back onto the road when she lost control, Hanson said. She overcorrected, and the vehicle rolled twice before coming to rest on the highway.

Cooper, who was headed to school in Plankinton, was going 65 mph when she lost control of her vehicle, the trooper said.

Hanson said Cooper was wearing a seat belt — “thank God,” he said — and remained inside the vehicle. She was taken to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. The vehicle was totaled, the trooper said. No citation was issued.
