MHS newspaper wins top award

Mitchell High School’s student newspaper, The Kernel, won first place recently in its division of a statewide contest.

Mitchell High School’s student newspaper, The Kernel, won first place recently in its division of a statewide contest.

The contest included this year’s first editions of high school student newspapers from across South Dakota. The Kernel, which is advised by Brooke Pejsa, placed first in the division for high schools with enrollments of more than 175 students. The Sioux Falls Lincoln Statesman placed second, and Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s The Knight Scroll received an honorable mention.

In the division for high schools with enrollments of fewer than 175 students, the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavalcade placed first, the Northwestern Scratchin’ Post placed second and the St. Mary Cardinal Review received an honorable mention.

The contest is conducted by the South Dakota High School Press Association, which is headquartered in Brookings.
