Area girls' and boys' basketball roundup: Herrold helps Parkston past Tea Area 61-33

PARKSTON — Erica Herrold recorded a double-double in Parkston’s 61-33 win over Tea Area in a high school girls’ basketball game Friday.

PARKSTON — Erica Herrold recorded a double-double in Parkston’s 61-33 win over Tea Area in a high school girls’ basketball game Friday.

Herrold scored 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Parkston. Justene Alley scored 11 points for the Trojans.

Parkston shot 16-of-67 from the field and 23-of-42 from the free-throw line. The Trojans recorded 48 rebounds and 9 turnovers in the win.

Parkston (2-0) plays Hanson Monday in Alexandria.

Amanda Haasch scored 13 points for Tea Area. Camden Roeman had 15 rebounds.

Tea shot 13-of-44 from the field and 6-of-18 from the free-throw line. Tea had 32 team rebounds and 15 turnovers.

Tea is 0-2 and hosts Deubrook today.

Parkston won the junior varsity game 49-19.

Avon 57, Gregory 37

GREGORY — Chesney Nagel scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Avon Pirates over the Gregory Gorillas 57-37 in a girls’ basketball game Friday.

Heidi Cap and Ariana Oorlog each scored 10 points in the win. Cap led the team with eight rebounds, while Nagel recorded four steals.

Avon made 24 of the team’s 50 attempts from the field, and went 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. The team finished the game with 17 rebounds and 12 turnovers.

The 1-0 Pirates host Wagner today.

Gregory’s lead scorer was Briana Leber, who finished with 18 points. Allison Sundquist and Sierra Thomas added six points each. Leber had 11 rebounds for the Gorillas.

Gregory shot 13-of-46 from the field and 9-of-18 from the free-throw line. The team finished with 21 rebounds and 21 turnovers.

Gregory is 0-2 with the loss and plays at Dakota Christian Tuesday in New Holland.

Corsica/Stickney 52,

Mount Vernon/Plankinton 37

PLANKINTON — Three players scored in double digits for Corsica/Stickney in the Jaguars’ 52-37 win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton Friday.

Hope Menning led the Jaguars with 18 points. Missy Johnson added 11 points and recorded five assists. Jessica Hoogers scored 11 points and had nine rebounds.

Corsica/Stickney shot 25-of-39 from the field and 6-of-14 from the free-throw line. The team recorded 23 rebounds and 14 turnovers.

Corsica/Stickney (1-0) plays Centerville today in Tea.

Erin Denning scored 15 points for the Titans. Megan Bultsma scored eight points and recorded 13 rebounds and four blocks.

MVP shot 14-of-52 from the field and 4-of-8 from the free-throw line. The Titans ended the game with 31 team rebounds and 18 turnovers.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (0-3) hosts Ethan Monday in Mount Vernon.

MVP won the junior varsity game 46-11.

TYNDALL — Bon Homme fell to Beresford 71-31 to go to 1-1 on the season.

Kelsey Sutera scored 10 points for Bon Homme and had seven rebounds and two steals. Karlee Kozak recorded two assists.

The Cavaliers shot 12-of-55 from the field and 7-of-19 from the free-throw line. Bon Homme recorded 27 team rebounds and 14 turnovers.

Beresford is 2-0 and plays at Dakota Valley Monday. Bon Homme plays at Vermillion Tuesday.

Beresford won the junior varsity game 45-22.

South Central 53, Scotland 22

BONESTEEL — The South Central boys’ basketball team began its season with a win by defeating Scotland 53-22.

Tyler Frank scored 16 points to lead South Central. Dakota Votaw added 13 points. Josh Tuttle had six steals in the win.

South Central made 24 field goal attempts and went 3-of-5 from the free-throw line. The Cougars had 20 team rebounds and 9 turnovers.

Garrett Kotalik and Anthony Walloch each scored six points for the Highlanders.

Scotland was 4-of-11 from the free-throw line and had 12 rebounds and 10 turnovers.

SC (1-0) hosts North Central (Neb.) Tuesday in Burke, while Scotland (0-1) plays Viborg-Hurley Monday in Hurley.

South Central won the junior varsity game 33-17.

MARION — Jason Van Winkle scored 22 points to lead Canistota over Marion 79-26 in a boys’ basketball game Friday.

Alex Robertson scored 16 points for the Hawks. Cody Bunger added 12 points. Van Winkle led the team in rebounds with eight, while Tyler Decker added six. Robertson recorded six assists and six steals in the win.

Canistota made 39 of its 74 field goal attempts and shot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. The Hawks had 29 team rebounds and five turnovers.

Canistota is 1-0 with the win and plays Irene-Wakonda Monday in Irene.

Jacob Weurts led the Bears with 10 points and nine rebounds. Nick Gortmaker scored nine points and ended the game with four assists and two steals.

Marion shot 11-of-30 from the field for 36 percent. The Bears had 14 team rebounds and 27 turnovers.

Marion is 0-1 and plays Hanson Dec. 18 in Alexandria.

VOLGA — Howard fell to Sioux Valley 91-34 to open the season in a Big East Conference boys’ basketball game Friday.

Tayton Vincent scored 19 points for the Cossacks.

Sioux Valley shot 37-of-67 from the field and 4-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Andrew Schwader led the Tigers with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Steve Larsen and Jordan Kuhle scored six points each. Landon Laible grabbed four rebounds. Kuhle had two steals.

Howard made 13 of 39 field goals and 6 of 15 free throws. The Tigers finished the game with 24 rebounds and 26 turnovers.

Sioux Valley (1-0) plays in Clark tonight, while Howard (0-1) hosts Chester Tuesday.

EMERY — Hanson defeated Bridgewater-Emery 54-47 in a season-opening boys’ basketball game Monday.

Jordan Marquardt scored 17 points for the Beavers. Trey Person scored 10 points. Matt Huber led the team with seven rebounds.

Hanson shot 20-of-44 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. The Beavers had 23 rebounds and 10 turnovers.

Clayton Dye scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds for the Huskies. Jacob Schweitzer scored 13 points.

Bridgewater-Emery shot 18-of-53 from the field and 6-of-11 from the free-throw line. The Huskies had 26 team rebounds and 18 turnovers.

Hanson (1-0) hosts Ethan today, while Bridgewater-Emery (0-1) hosts Dell Rapids St. Mary Monday in Bridgewater.

CHAMBERLAIN — Skyler Bertram scored 24 points in Chamberlain’s 66-32 win over Santee (Neb.) in the Cub’s season opening game Friday.

Reuben Estes scored 14 points in the win, while Lane Shroyer added 12 points. Dalton Andera led the team with nine rebounds.

Chamberlain shot 22-of-59 from the field and 13-of-19 from the free-throw line. The Cubs recorded 33 team rebounds and committed 17 turnovers.

Chamberlain (1-0) plays at Parkston Friday.

FREEMAN — Freeman Academy fell to Alcester-Hudson 42-41 in the first game of the season Friday.

Grant Johnson recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds. Mitchell Johnson had 11 rebounds. Alcester-Hudson shot 17-of-53 from the field. The Cubs had 38 rebounds and 21 turnovers.

Noah Yoder scored 13 points for Freeman Academy. Gabriel Eisenbeis recorded nine points and nine rebounds.

The Bobcats shot 13-of-51 from the field. Freeman Academy had 38 rebounds and 18 turnovers.

Alcester-Hudson plays West Sioux (Iowa) today in Hawarden, Iowa. Freeman Academy plays Oldhma-Ramona/Rutland today in Ramona.

Freeman Academy won the junior varsity game 27-18.

FREEMAN — Freeman fell to Viborg-Hurley 72-71 in the first boys’ basketball game of the season Friday.

Jordan Rinehart scored 23 points in the loss. Shaun Becker scored 17 points and had eight rebounds. Cole Paulson scored 16 points and Caleb Lang scored 10 points and recorded eight rebounds.

The Flyers shot 27-of-50 from the field and 9-of-16 from the free-throw line. Freeman finished the game with 30 team rebounds and 10 turnovers.

Viborg-Hurley (1-0) hosts Scotland Monday in Huron, while Freeman (0-1) hosts Bon Homme Monday.
