Area girls' and boys' basketball roundup: Herrold helps Parkston past Tea Area 61-33

PARKSTON — Erica Herrold recorded a double-double in Parkston’s 61-33 win over Tea Area in a high school girls’ basketball game Friday.

Herrold scored 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Parkston. Justene Alley scored 11 points for the Trojans.

Parkston shot 16-of-67 from the field and 23-of-42 from the free-throw line. The Trojans recorded 48 rebounds and 9 turnovers in the win.

Parkston (2-0) plays Hanson Monday in Alexandria.

Amanda Haasch scored 13 points for Tea Area. Camden Roeman had 15 rebounds.

Tea shot 13-of-44 from the field and 6-of-18 from the free-throw line. Tea had 32 team rebounds and 15 turnovers.

Tea is 0-2 and hosts Deubrook today.

Avon 57, Gregory 37

GREGORY — Chesney Nagel scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Avon Pirates over the Gregory Gorillas 57-37 in a girls’ basketball game Friday.

Heidi Cap and Ariana Oorlog each scored 10 points in the win. Cap led the team with eight rebounds, while Nagel recorded four steals.

Avon made 24 of the team’s 50 attempts from the field, and went 11-of-14 from the free-throw line. The team finished the game with 17 rebounds and 12 turnovers.

The 1-0 Pirates host Wagner today.

Gregory’s lead scorer was Briana Leber, who finished with 18 points. Allison Sundquist and Sierra Thomas added six points each. Leber had 11 rebounds for the Gorillas.

Gregory shot 13-of-46 from the field and 9-of-18 from the free-throw line. The team finished with 21 rebounds and 21 turnovers.

Gregory is 0-2 with the loss and plays at Dakota Christian Tuesday in New Holland.

PLANKINTON — Three players scored in double digits for Corsica/Stickney in the Jaguars’ 52-37 win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton Friday.

Hope Menning led the Jaguars with 18 points. Missy Johnson added 11 points and recorded five assists. Jessica Hoogers scored 11 points and had nine rebounds.

Corsica/Stickney shot 25-of-39 from the field and 6-of-14 from the free-throw line. The team recorded 23 rebounds and 14 turnovers.

Corsica/Stickney (1-0) plays Centerville today in Tea.

Erin Denning scored 15 points for the Titans. Megan Bultsma scored eight points and recorded 13 rebounds and four blocks.

MVP shot 14-of-52 from the field and 4-of-8 from the free-throw line. The Titans ended the game with 31 team rebounds and 18 turnovers.

BONESTEEL — The South Central boys’ basketball team began its season with a win by defeating Scotland 53-22.

Tyler Frank scored 16 points to lead South Central. Dakota Votaw added 13 points. Josh Tuttle had six steals in the win.

South Central made 24 field goal attempts and went 3-of-5 from the free-throw line. The Cougars had 20 team rebounds and 9 turnovers.

Garrett Kotalik and Anthony Walloch each scored six points for the Highlanders.

Scotland was 4-of-11 from the free-throw line and had 12 rebounds and 10 turnovers.

SC (1-0) hosts North Central (Neb.) Tuesday in Burke, while Scotland (0-1) plays Viborg-Hurley Monday in Hurley.

MARION — Jason Van Winkle scored 22 points to lead Canistota over Marion 79-26 in a boys’ basketball game Friday.

Alex Robertson scored 16 points for the Hawks. Cody Bunger added 12 points. Van Winkle led the team in rebounds with eight, while Tyler Decker added six. Robertson recorded six assists and six steals in the win.

Canistota made 39 of its 74 field goal attempts and shot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. The Hawks had 29 team rebounds and five turnovers.

Canistota is 1-0 with the win and plays Irene-Wakonda Monday in Irene.

Jacob Weurts led the Bears with 10 points and nine rebounds. Nick Gortmaker scored nine points and ended the game with four assists and two steals.

Andrew Schwader led the Tigers with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Steve Larsen and Jordan Kuhle scored six points each. Landon Laible grabbed four rebounds. Kuhle had two steals.
