AVON — Avon Superintendent Tom Culver suffered a heart attack Thursday.

Culver is also the school’s activities director and high school football coach.

A staffer at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls confirmed Culver, 52, was a patient, but declined to give a condition report.

Avon School Board President Scott Van Gerpen acknowledged Culver had a heart attack, which occurred “sometime in the morning.” He wouldn’t give any other details.

“We’re waiting to see what happens and see what the condition is,” Van Gerpen said. “ … He’s in our thoughts and prayers. I’m hoping to hear good news.”

Culver took over as Avon’s head football coach in 1999. He led the team to state titles in Class 9A in 2002, 2004 and 2008. His team won the 9B title in 2005.

Hanson High School football coach Jim Haskamp, a friend, said Culver was airlifted to a hospital.

“I’ve heard he’s in stable condition,” Haskamp said. “That’s really all I know.”
