Maybe we’re just suckers for charity this time of year, but we must thank the donor of the shiny gold coin that annually finds its way into the hands of Salvation Army officials.

It’s become quite a holiday tradition here in Mitchell. Each year, the Salvation Army sends out a cadre of bell-ringers who watch over the donation kettles placed in various stores during Christmas shopping season. And each year, as staffers go through the donations, they find a gold Krugerrand, a coin native to South Africa and one that likely will net approximately $2,000 for the Salvation Army.

It’s been happening for years, and it’s all been without any notoriety whatsoever for the anonymous donor.

Today, we sincerely thank the donor.

Christmas is a celebration of Christ’s birth, but it also is about giving. It’s about making lives better. It’s about goodwill toward man. We urge readers to remember this as they go into these final weeks before Christmas.

Perhaps it’s tossing a few coins or bills into the Salvation Army kettle. Perhaps it’s participating in one of several local programs that help purchase gifts for children. Or perhaps it’s just a quiet gesture that nobody will realize ever happened.

There are so many ways to make a difference this holiday season. Please, please consider doing something — anything — to make someone else’s day.

And to the person who donates the Kruggerand each year, thank you so much for reminding us what “Christmas spirit” really means.
