The No. 17 Dakota Wesleyan wrestling team earned wins from Richard Rios, Karl Bell and Tyler Sarringar in its 27-9 loss to Northern State University Wednesday at the Christen Family Wellness Center in Mitchell.
The Wolves, who are receiving votes in NCAA Division II polls, won seven matches against the Tigers.
DWU head coach Matt Sedivy said the team was in a position to win with three matches to go.
“We could’ve won a couple more matches,” he said. “We had people on the ropes and didn’t put them away.”
After NSU’s Anthony Bruno pinned DWU’s Zach Nelson at 125, the Tigers (2-2) tied the match at 5 with wins from Rios (133) and Bell (141), a true freshman.
Sedivy said he was especially pleased with how Bell wrestled as a newcomer.
The Wolves earned wins in the 149-, 157- and 165-pound weight classes, going ahead 14-5 in the match. Sarringer (174) broke NSU’s win streak beating Anthony Navarro by major decision 13-3.
The Wolves went on to win the final three matches to close out the dual 27-9.
“We’re wrestling good teams but it’s the little things we need to fix,” Sedivy said. “We’ve got to pay attention to detail in order to keep progressing.”
The Tigers are back in action against Augustana College, Air Force and Northwestern College at 3 p.m. Friday in Jackson, Minn.
