Area girls' high school basketball: MCHS girls win 50-21 in home opener

Mitchell Christian outscored Wolsey-Wessington 17-4 in the first quarter and continued to roll to a 50-21 victory in its home opener Tuesday.
“We’re very proud of the girls and how they played,” MCHS head coach Jackie Van Laecken said. “We had an all-around full effort, and the girls had a great game.”
The Golden Eagles had two players in double-digits. Becca Glanzer had 15 points, seven steals and four rebounds and Alexa Van Laecken recorded 14 points, 10 assists, seven steals and four rebounds.
“Alexa and Becca do a great job defensively,” Jackie Van Laecken said. “They apply a lot of pressure and force turnovers.”
MCHS (1-0) plays Iroquois Friday, while Wolsey-Wessington (0-1) plays DeSmet Monday.

Amber Baan Hofman had eight points and seven rebounds for the Cadets. Dakota Christian shot 33 percent from the field.
Colome was led by Tiffany Hauf, who had 19 points in the game. Tara Farley led all players with 12 rebounds. Colome outrebounded the Cadets 29-27.

Gayville-Volin’s Rachel Haas led all players with 19 points and Kelia Barta had 12 in the win.
Menno’ Kylee Kessler earned a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Christina Herrboldt added eight points in the loss.

Rachel Bartscher scored 13 points for MCM and had seven rebounds, one assist and three steals. Jean Skoglund scored 13 points and added 10 assists and two steals. Stefanie Matthis scored 11 points and had six rebounds.
Marion’s Kylee Hughes scored 10 points and had two steals.

PLANKINTON — The Chamberlain girls’ basketball team opened its season with a 70-43 win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton Tuesday.
Abbey Handel led the Cubs’ offense with 24 points. Kennedy Wagner scored 22 points and Logan Pickner added 10. Chamberlain recorded 34 total rebounds with Jamie Knippling leading the team with eight. The Cubs had 10 turnovers in the win.
Payleen O’Day led the Titans with 13 points. Megan Bultsma scored 12 points. Mount Vernon totaled 23 team rebounds and 22 turnovers in the loss.
Chamberlain (1-0) hosts Wessington Springs Tuesday. MVP (0-1) plays Dakota Christian Thursday in New Holland.

Tiana Kayser scored 14 points and recorded eight rebounds and seven steals for Bridgewater-Emery. The Huskies recorded 26 team rebounds and committed 22 turnovers.
Irene-Wakonda’s Makayla Mohr led the team with 12 points. Bailey Hinseth scored nine points and Dana Schenk had nine rebounds. The Eagles, who won the JV game, had 29 team rebounds and 24 turnovers.

PARKSTON — Erica Herrold scored a game-high 28 points to lead Parkston over Freeman 52-45 to open the high school girls’ basketball season.
Krista Radke scored 11 points for the Trojans. Herrold led with 16 rebounds. Parkston had 40 team rebounds and five turnovers.
Nicole Sherry led Freeman’s offense with 12 points. Dina Soulek added 11 points. Sherry had seven of the team’s 36 rebounds. The Flyers had 10 team turnovers.
Parkston (1-0), which also won the JV game, plays Tea Area Friday at Parkston. Freeman (0-1) hosts Irene-Wakonda on Friday.

WAGNER — Wagner opened its season with a 60-50 win over Winner Tuesday.
Jessa Doom had a game-high 23 points for the Red Raiders. Ali Kuca scored 13 points and Nicole Weber added 11. Kuca led the team with 10 rebounds while Weber grabbed nine. Gina Soukup recorded five steals for Wagner, which recorded 34 team rebounds and 19 turnovers.
Tawny Berry led the Warriors with 12 points and seven rebounds. Cassidy Hanson scored 11 points in the loss. Katie Mathis grabbed seven boards. Winner had a team total 27 rebounds and committed 18 turnovers.
Winner won the junior varsity and “C” games.
Wagner (1-0) plays at Avon Saturday. Winner (0-1) plays at Harrisburg Saturday.

ETHAN — Hanson opened its season with an overtime win over Ethan 63-60 Tuesday.
Cassidy Graham scored 18 points for the Beavers, who also won the JV game. Leah Marsh added 11 points. Erica Nelson recorded six of the team’s 21 rebounds. Graham had four steals. Hanson committed 12 turnovers.
Darbi Gustafson was Ethan’s high scorer with 18 points. Rachel Hawkins scored 14 points and Whitney Endres scored 11 points. Gustafson led the Rustlers with 13 rebounds. Endres had four assists. Ethan recorded 26 team rebounds and 22 turnovers.
Hanson (1-0) hosts Bridgewater-Emery Thursday. Ethan (0-1) plays Mount Vernon/Plankinton Monday in Mount Vernon.

PRESHO — Ashley Green scored 12 points to lead South Central over Lyman 30-26 in the season opening girls’ basketball game Tuesday.
Whitney Hutchinson scored 10 points in the win. South Central was 8-of-22 from the free-throw line.
Anna Flitner led Lyman in scoring with seven points while Bailey Almond added six. Flitner also led the Raiders in rebounds with eight and in assists with four. Cedar Jandreau added five rebounds and three steals. Lyman shot 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
South Central (1-0) hosts North Central (Neb.) Tuesday. Lyman (0-1) plays Potter County Saturday in Gettysburg.

Kennidy Asche scored 26 points for Scotland and recorded eight rebounds, four assists and six steals. Aisha Abbink and Sam German each scored 10 points. Abbink added five rebounds, three assists and four steals. Lacey Bietz recorded three assists.
Viborg-Hurley (1-0) plays at Canistota Saturday. Scotland (0-1) hosts Menno Tuesday.

TDA’s Hannah Just led the Night Hawks with eight points and four steals. Kelley Potterman finished with seven rebounds and four assists, while Laura Fuerst had six rebounds and three assist.
