Nick Tschakert, a 5-foot-10 defender, has signed with the Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer team, the school announced Tuesday.

A native of Watertown, Tschakert was a two-year starter and three-time letter winner for the Arrows. He also played for the South Dakota United club team.

DWU volleyball team gets 2 scholar athletes

Two members of the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team have been named Daktronic NAIA scholar-athletes, it was announced recently.

Juniors Sam Sandau and Kelli Swenson earned the first academic honors. Sandau is an outside hitter from Tripp who is an English education major with a 3.94 GPA.

Swenson, a setter from Chamberlain, is a public service and leadership and business double major with a 3.93 GPA.

DWU’s Johnson honored for 2nd straight week

Dakota Wesleyan University forward Kim Johnson was named the Great Plains Athletic Conference player of the week Tuesday.

Johnson, a junior from Sioux Falls, landed the same honor last week.

In two victories last week, Johnson averaged 26.5 points per game and five rebounds to help DWU improve to 8-2. She tied a career high with 30 points against Dordt and had 23 points to help the Tigers upset No. 25 Hastings.

On the week, she went 18-for-30 from the field. She leads the league in scoring and is fourth in the NAIA.

DWU takes on Morningside at 6 p.m. today at the Corn Palace.

Iowa beats South Dakota men 87-63

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Aaron White tied his season high with 21 points as Iowa beat South Dakota 87-63 on Tuesday night.

Devyn Marble added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Hawkeyes (7-2), who pulled away from the Coyotes with a 15-0 run at the end of the first half.

Trevor Gruis scored 16 points to lead South Dakota (4-5).

Iowa controlled the interior with 54 points in the paint and a 50-31 rebounding margin.

South Dakota nailed nine 3-pointers, including 5 of 8 to start the game. The Hawkeyes finished 2 of 16 from outside.

SDSU women come back, win 66-65 over EMU

BROOKINGS — Megan Waytashek’s layup with 9.7 seconds left in the game, lifted South Dakota State University to a 66-65 victory over Eastern Michigan University Tuesday.

The Jackrabbits (5-4) shot 40.4 percent from the field, while EMU (1-7) shot 48.1 percent from the field.

Waytashek led SDSU with 17 points. Ashley Eide had 15 points and made five 3-pointers in the win.

EMU was led by Miranda Tate, who scored 24 points in the game.

Local coaches, players to talk at Quarterback Club

The Mitchell Quarterback Club is set to meet at 7:30 p.m. today at the Depot.

Basketball coaches from Dakota Wesleyan and Mitchell High School will be speaking, along with MHS boys’ basketball seniors.
