PLANKINTON — The Aurora County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary that happened early Monday morning at a convenience store in Plankinton.

According to Aurora County Deputy Dwight DeBoer, the burglary took place shortly after 4:30 a.m. at Roadside 66, located on Plankinton’s Main Street. A white male dressed in dark clothing threw a cement block through the front door to gain entry to the business, which was closed at the time, DeBoer said.

Once inside, the man pried open three video lottery machines and stole an undetermined amount of cash, DeBoer said. Investigators believe, but have not confirmed, that another person may have waited for the burglar in a vehicle outside the store, he added.

The entire incident lasted less than two minutes, DeBoer said.

“I honestly and truly believe this guy has done it before,” he said. “He knew exactly what he was doing.”

DeBoer described the suspect as a white male, around 5 feet 10 inches tall and between 30 and 40 years old.

DeBoer did not believe the burglary was related to any other recent crimes in the area, he said.

In nearby Mitchell, the Dakota Sunset liquor and convenience store was robbed barely more than a week ago.

“We’re still in the investigation stage,” he said.

The Division of Criminal Investigation has been notified of the case and will assist in the investigation, DeBoer said.
