WATERTOWN — The Kernel wrestling team took sixth place and had four wrestlers go undefeated at the Watertown Dual Tournament Saturday.
Mitchell suffered team losses to Watertown, Huron and Canby, and beat Milbank, for its only team win of the day.
“It was a learning experience for our young team,” Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said.

The Kernels lost 54-17 to Watertown and earned wins from Junior Alex Herrick (132), sophomore Ethan Parr (138), sophomore Matt Larson (145) and sophomore Robert McCardle (285), all of which went undefeated on the day. Mitchell lost to Huron 54-20 and defeated Milbank 42-30.
In the fifth-place match, the Kernels lost to Canby 43-29, earning wins from sophomore Trey Hohn (120), Herrick, Larson, senior Ben Kummer (170) and McCardle. Hohn went 3-1 on the day.
Carpenter said he expected the veterans to do well but one undefeated wrestler surprised him.
“I was really pleased with Ethan,” he said. “He battled back from matches that he was behind in and came out with a win.”
Carpenter said the team is where he predicted and he saw promise in a lot of his younger kids.
“I don’t think we over performed but we did make progress throughout the day,” he said. “That’s what we have to do throughout the season.”
Mitchell is back in action at 2 p.m. Friday at the Rapid City Tournament.
