Howard man dies, Mitchell man injured in accident

A Howard man died in a two-vehicle crash on S.D. Highway 34 about six miles west of Howard on Thursday, Nov. 29.

HOWARD, S.D. – A Howard man died in a two-vehicle crash on S.D. Highway 34 about six miles west of Howard on Thursday, Nov. 29.

John Michael Steinmetz, 39, was eastbound in a 2006 Pontiac Torrent. He drove into the path of a westbound 2001 Ford Explorer driven by Terry Lee Dragseth, 51, of Mitchell. Steinmetz, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was dead at the scene. Dragseth, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Mitchell hospital.

No further information is immediately available.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Miner County Sheriff’s Office, Howard Ambulance and Howard Fire Department assisted.
