Former Mitchell police chief wins award

FORT PIERRE — Doug Kirkus, president of Safety Benefits Inc., was presented the 2012 Excellence in Municipal Government Award by Gov. Dennis Daugaard at the South Dakota Municipal League’s 79th annual conference held Oct. 3-5 in Pierre.
Kirkus spent 21 years in law enforcement, including nearly seven years as Mitchell’s police chief.
He works with the league and its associated pools to provide members with tools they can use to reduce their risk of loss, to temper losses that do occur, and to assist the members with anything needed to keep safe.
