SIOUX FALLS — Freshman Quinci Herll swept all events against Yankton and Sioux Falls Washington in Mitchell’s first gymnastics meet of the season Monday in Sioux Falls.

Mitchell took the top three all-around finishes as Herll recorded a 35.8 to take first place. She was followed by teammates Ellie Rew with a 33.95 for second place and Nicole Wittstruck with a 32.85 for a third-place finish.

Emily Prill took fifth in the all-around with a 32.05.

The Kernels won the meet with a team score of 136.75, beating Yankton, which scored a 126.4, and Washington, which had a 102.95.

“I’m really, really happy with how they did,” head coach Audra Rew said. “I was really impressed with the confidence level at the first meet.”

Rew said her team had a few errors but overall looked as if it already had a few meets under its belt.

“There are all new rules that have demanded a little more in the requirements, and I thought they hit most of their skills well,” said Rew, adding that the Kernels counted a few falls. “We still have small things that we know we can fix, and you want that early in the season.”

Herll scored a 9.3 on vault, 8.4 on bars, 8.85 on beam and a 9.25 on floor, all of which she took first place in. Rew posted an 8.0 on vault for second place, 8.1 on beam for third and a 9.15 on floor for second.

Wittstruck finished fourth on vault with an 8.6, fifth on bars with a 7.85 and third on floor with an 8.95. Prill had an 8.1 on beam for third and an 8.9 on floor for fourth place.

Josie Dierks took third on vault with an 8.75 and third on bars with a 7.95, while Kayla Kerr took fifth on vault with a score of 8.55.

The Kernels’ next action is at the Sioux Falls Invitational at 4 p.m. Friday at Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School.
