GLAD YOU ASKED: New MHS BB coach is hired part-time

Q. Gary Munsen had a good record during his stay at Mitchell High School. Now the school has hired Tom Young as boys’ basketball coach. I understand he even gets more money than Munsen, but I think Young has an ad in the paper for eye care. Isn’t coaching high school basketball a full-time job with practice and games? How can he also give eye care?

A. Mitchell Superintendent Joe Graves said head coaching positions are not full-time positions; they are part-time, extracurricular jobs that happen outside regular school hours.

“I’m thankful that a man of Tom Young’s medical training, character and experience is willing to take on a job like this, in addition to all the busy things he has to do as an optometrist,” Graves said.

Tom Young laughed and said, “Coach Munsen probably deserved more money than he got.”

Munsen was paid $6,610 in his final coaching year. Young will be paid $6,676.

Young said he coached at Mitchell Christian for 18 years and carried on a full-time optometry practice by arranging his basketball practices to match his schedule.

Young said his new business arrangement with Avera Medical Group Optometry will allow him even more scheduling flexibility.
