Driver’s near-crash with local police car leads to DUI arrestBy: Staff reports, The Daily Republic
A Sioux Falls man was arrested for drunken driving at about 2:14 a.m. Nov. 10 after nearly crashing into a police car at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Sanborn Boulevard in Mitchell.
Wayne Ryan Hjellum, 22, is charged with second-offense drunken driving after allegedly driving eastbound through a flashing red light at Seventh Avenue and Sanborn Boulevard, forcing a Mitchell police officer to change lanes to avoid a crash, a police affidavit says.
The officer stopped Hjellum and had him perform a series of field sobriety tests, which Hjellum did poorly, the affidavit says.
Hjellum faces a maximum of one year in jail and a $2,000 fine. He is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
