Watertown stuns O' Gorman at Class AA tourney

RAPID CITY — The No. 8 seed Watertown upset No. 1 Sioux Falls O’Gorman in the opening match of the Class AA state volleyball tournament Thursday in Rapid City.

RAPID CITY — The No. 8 seed Watertown upset No. 1 Sioux Falls O’Gorman in the opening match of the Class AA state volleyball tournament Thursday in Rapid City.

The Arrows lost the first set but came back to defeat the Knights in four sets, winning 15-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17.

Watertown’s Ashtin McClemans led all players with 20 kills in the match. Emily Pengilly had 24 set assists for the Arrows (8-13), and Hannah Whitlock added 34 digs in the win.

O’Gorman (20-3) was led by Lauren Witte with 14 kills and 13 digs. Dalee Stene had 44 set assists and eight digs. Erin Beacom recorded 22 digs and Taryn Kloth added 21 digs in the loss.

Watertown will play Sioux Falls Washington in the semifinal round at 7 p.m. Central time today at Rapid City Central High School. O’Gorman will play Mitchell in a consolation match at 1 p.m. Central time.

Sioux Falls Roosevelt 3, Huron 0

RAPID CITY — No. 3 Sioux Falls Roosevelt defeated No. 6 Huron in straight sets in the first round of the Class AA state volleyball tournament Thursday at Rapid City Central High School.

Set scores were 25-20, 25-22, 25-19.

Krista DeJong led the Rough Riders with 16 kills, 16 digs and two blocks. Erinn Temple had 46 set assists and eight digs and Ashley Beaner tallied 14 kills and 19 digs for Roosevelt (21-5).

Huron’s Katelyn Allerdings led all players with 18 kills. MaKayla Goergen recorded 25 set assists and seven digs and Taylar Rotert had 14 digs for the Tigers (12-10).

Roosevelt will play Rapid City Stevens in the semifinal round at 9 p.m. Central time today, while Huron plays Aberdeen Central in a consolation match at 2:45 p.m. today.

Rapid City Stevens 3, Aberdeen Central 1

Set scores were 25-19, 17-25, 25-14, 25-19

The Eagles (17-3) were led by Lauren McCafferty with 10 kills, 11 digs and one block. Kelsey Hannigan tallied 17 set assists and Meggie Hanson added 22 digs.

The Raiders (14-10) were led by Skylar Larson with 21 kills and 14 digs. Anna Sykora recorded 37 set assists and 15 digs in the win.

Rapid City Stevens plays Roosevelt in the semifinal round at 9 p.m. Central time today, while Aberdeen Central plays Huron in a consolation match at 2:45 p.m. today.

Belle Fourche 3, Mobridge-Pollock 0

WATERTOWN — No. 1 Belle Fourche defeated No. 8 Mobridge-Pollock in straight sets in the first round of the Class A state volleyball tournament Thursday in Watertown.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.

Belle Fourche’s Fehrin Ward led all players with 14 kills and added eight digs. Taylor Gubbrud had 12 kills and six kills and Liz Day recorded 33 set assists.

Mobridge-Pollock’s Kady Pinney had eight kills and nine digs, Callie Slater recorded 24 set assists and eight digs and Ellie Rabenberg had 13 digs in the loss.

Belle Fourche plays Dakota Valley in the semifinal round at 6 p.m. today, while Mobridge-Pollock plays Wagner in a consolation match at noon today.

Sioux Falls Christian 3, Aberdeen Roncalli 0

WATERTOWN — Kristin Stern had 11 kills in No. 3 Sioux Falls Christian’s 3-0 victory over No. 6 Aberdeen Roncalli in the first round of the Class A state volleyball tournament Thursday in Watertown.

Set scores were 25-14, 25-11, 25-17.

Hayley McCarron had 37 set assists, three kills and five digs in the win. Brooke Van Gorp recorded 14 digs for SFC.

Abby Dockter led Roncalli with five kills. Brittany Holzer had seven digs in the loss.

SFC plays Sioux Valley in the semifinal round at 7:45 p.m. today, while Aberdeen Roncalli plays Pine Ridge in a consolation match at 1:45 p.m. today.

Sioux Valley 3, Pine Ridge 1

WATERTOWN — No. 7 Sioux Valley lost the first set but came back to win in four sets against Pine Ridge in the first round of the Class A state volleyball tournament Thursday in Watertown.

Set scores were 22-25, 25-14, 29-27, 26-24.

Sioux Valley’s Haley Hillestad led all players with 22 kills and added 10 digs and four aces. Mariah VanderWal recorded 17 kills, four blocks and three digs. Kaylee VanderWal tallied 51 set assists and 19 digs in the win.

Pine Ridge’s Brooke Pond had 20 kills and eight digs. Anissa Martin had 29 set assists and seven kills in the loss.

Sioux Valley plays Sioux Falls Christian in the semifinal round at 7:45 p.m. today, while Pine Ridge plays Aberdeen Roncalli in a consolation match at 1:45 p.m. today.

James Valley Christian 3, Herreid/Selby Area 1

No. 6 James Valley Christian upset No. 3 Herreid/Selby Area in four sets in the first round of the Class B state volleyball tournament Thursday in Mitchell.

Set scores were 9-25, 30-28, 25-21, 26-24.

JVC’s Gracey Gross had 13 kills and 29 digs and Tara Nihart recorded 14 set assists, eight kills and 34 digs.

HSA’s Shauni Schwartz led all players with 22 kills and added eight digs and five blocks. McKenzie Frank had 28 set assists and 21 digs in the loss.

JVC plays Warner in the semifinal round at 8 p.m. today, while HSA plays Timber Lake in a consolation match at 1:45 p.m. today.

Warner 3, Timber Lake 0

No. 2 Warner defeated Timber Lake 25-9, 25-8, 25-14 in the first round of the Class B state volleyball tournament in Mitchell.

Warner’s Rachel Rogers had 12 kills, three blocks and two digs. Ashley Rozell recorded 23 set assists in the win.

Kristi Mettler led Timber Lake with six kills and seven digs. Kathryn Biegler tallied 13 digs.

Warner plays James Valley Christian in the semifinal round at 8 p.m. today, while Timber Lake plays Herreid/Selby Area in a consolation match at 1:45 p.m. today.
