Gladys Scott, Mitchell

Gladys Scott, 89, Mitchell, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell.

She was born on April 7, 1923.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church, Mount Vernon. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Gladys was the oldest of four children at the family homestead to Henry and Marie (Paulsen) Schlund.

She attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1940.

In 1942, Gladys completed the two-year Normal Teaching Course at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, then taught at Victor Country School northwest of Mount Vernon.

Gladys married Wally Scott on Oct. 2, 1942. Last month, they celebrated their 70th anniversary.

At first, they lived on the farm northeast of Mount Vernon. In 1950, she and Wally moved their young family to town to help Wally’s father in the International Harvester business. Gladys helped grow the business as bookkeeper and through other supportive roles.

Gladys was never idle. She enjoyed school, sewing, gardening, quilting, canning, baking, painting, swimming, mowing the lawn and doting on grandchildren. She wrote an extensive family history.

She was active in Friendship Bible Study, church groups and the numerous school and 4-H activities that her children were involved in.

She was generous with her time and smiles and maintained her kind, sweet, light-hearted spirit right up to her death.

In 1962, Wally and Gladys assumed ownership of the Mitchell IH business but maintained residence in Mount Vernon.

They moved to Mitchell in 1982 after their children had all graduated from high school.

Left to share Gladys’ memory are Wally, her loving husband of 70 years, six children: Robert (Sharon) Scott, Mary Ellen (Paul) Connelly, Marjorie (Delmar) Goldhammer, Joan (Pat) Cannon, Janet Scott and John (Debra) Scott; 13 grandchildren: Chris (Tehra), Dave (Bryn), Nick (Kara) and Rob (Jolene) Scott; Alex (Mandra), Sam (Shelley) and Liz Connelly; Suzie (Dave) Munce, Maggie (Jeff) Oliver, Sara (Emiel) Gregor, Patrick Cannon, Mike (Nicole) Scott and Kara (Nick) Shawd; 21 great-grandchildren, her sisters: Elaine Erickson and Lois (Delvin) Feistner; her brother, Bill Schlund; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, great-granddaughter, Elle Scott; sister-in-law, Bonnie Schlund; and brother-in-law, James Erickson.

The family expresses many thanks for the kindhearted care of the Rev. Mindy Ehrke, Dr. Lucio Margallo, nurses and other caregivers at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
