Things to remember

LETCHER AMERICAN LEGIONS HOLDS PANCAKE FEED: A pancake and sausage feed sponsored by the American Legion will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Community Center, Letcher. A free will offering will be accepted.

BAKED POTATO SOCIAL SET FOR SUNDAY: Holy Family Altar Society baked potato social will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mitchell.

There will be baked potatoes with a variety of toppings, homemade bars and a drink. A free will donation will be accepted. Bingo will be played for 25 cents per card.

WOONSOCKET SETS CONCERT: “Silent Night! Holy Night!” a Christmas concert, will be presented by the community choir at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, at the Community Center, Woonsocket. There will be a potluck supper following the concert. There is no charge for the event but the choir asks that non-perishable items be brought for the Sanborn County Food Bank.

Fast facts

Perhaps the most significant fur trade/military fort on the western American frontier, Fort Pierre Chouteau, now the city of Fort Pierre, was built in 1832 by John Jacob Astor’s (1763-1848) American Fur Company, as part of its expansion into the Upper Missouri region.

Today in history

On this date in 2008, Mitchell resident expressed concern about the noise that could come from the proposed 1,800-seat outdoor amphitheater at Lake Mitchell. Other concerns about the amphitheater included the loss of the city’s sledding spot.
