CUSTER (AP) — Visitors to Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota saw an unusual sight Tuesday: the large mountain carving was bathed in blue light.

The idea was to bring awareness to diabetes prevention efforts. The Crazy Horse Memorial joined 400 other landmarks all over the world in a special night lighting ceremony to promote World Diabetes Day, which was Tuesday. Blue signifies the sky shared by all people and the unified response to the diabetes threat.

The large carving was illuminated from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time.

A similar lighting event was planned in Sioux Falls at Falls Park from 5 to 11:30 p.m. local time.
