Florence Scheetz, Mitchell

Florence Scheetz, 92, of Mitchell, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.

She was born Feb. 16, 1920.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Mitchell. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Bittner Funeral Chapel, Mitchell.

Florence Emilie Scheetz was born to August and Minna (Koehn) Schumacher at Hillside. She graduated from Parkston High School in 1937 and attended Southern Normal at Springfield where she obtained a teaching certificate. She returned to Hillside and taught in rural Douglas County for eight years. On June 11, 1946, she married Oscar Scheetz and moved to Mitchell.

While raising a family, Florence continued her education, received a degree in education from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1967 and taught school for another 20 years. She also taught Sunday school and was active in LWML and the ladies quilting group at Zion for many years.

Surviving are sons, Jim (Sheila) Scheetz, Zeeland, Mich; Steve Scheetz, Yankton; daughters, Sandy (Craig Starr) Scheetz, Eugene, Ore., Dori Olsen, Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Joshua Starr, Telluride, Colo., and Rachel Starr, Eugene, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, (Nov. 19, 2010), a son-in-law, parents and three brothers.
