Five Mitchell High School volleyball players were given Eastern South Dakota Conference honors, which were voted on by conference head coaches.
Middle hitter Taylin Alm and defensive specialist Megan Farnham, along with 12 other players, were named to the all-ESD Conference first team.
Alm, a junior, leads the conference in kills with 374 on the season. Alm also has the highest hitting percentage in the ESD conference with 33. She has 65 blocks, 58 digs and 18 aces for Mitchell.
Farnham, a senior, leads the conference defensively with 522 digs and has broken the record for number of digs in a single match, which is currently 41, three times this season.
Kernels head coach Deb Thill said Alm and Farnham deserve these honors.
“Taylin leads us in kills in pretty much every match we play,” said Thill, whose team is 15-8. “Megan’s passing ability is why other teams try not to serve at her, and she has tremendous leadership skills for our team.”
Mitchell’s Emma Schmidt, who was given ESD honorable mention honors, tied the record in the first round of the District 3AA tournament against Huron Nov. 1. Only five juniors, including Alm and Schmidt, were named to the first team and honorable mention list.
“Emma is a really good all-around player for us,” Thill said. “She plays a lot on defense and offense and plays a big role in our successes.”
Schmidt has 149 kills and 255 digs for the Kernels.
Along with Schmidt, a junior, seniors Kendra Morgan and Kerri Young were named to the honorable mention group.
“Kendra touches the ball during every point and you have to have a strong individual at that role,” Thill said. “She makes everything work for us.
“Kerri is a great strength at the net for us and has been that way throughout the year.”
Morgan has 830 set assists on the season and Young has 230 kills and 53 blocks for Mitchell.
