Turnovers costly as Tigers fall to York

The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team gave up a 16-point second half lead and suffered a 98-94 loss to York College Wednesday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

“For us to be up by 16 and let them crawl back into the game on mistakes we made is really tough to swallow,” said DWU head coach Shane Murphy. “I have to give York the credit, they made a lot of little plays that make a difference in a ball game.”

The game was evenly matched as both teams shot 52 percent from the field; however, DWU had 21 turnovers to York’s nine.

The game was tied at 41 at the half and the Tigers came out firing in the second half, earning their 16-point lead early on. York (3-1) took advantage of the turnovers and crawled back into the match and tied the score with five minutes left in the game.

The game was tied with 16 seconds left on the clock when York’s Desmond Strickland hit a 3-pointer to take the lead. DWU (2-1) had two chances to tie the game but was unsuccessful.

“I know I could’ve done a better job coaching in the last minute. I thought we had a really good look in one possession but I should’ve used a timeout to get ourselves back in order when they got us out of our offense,” Murphy said.

Aireus Stephenson led DWU with 24 points and York’s Marcus Johnson led all players with 29 points.
