Andes Central, Wagner headed to state tourney

COLTON — The Wagner Red Raiders pulled out a five-set victory but had their work cut out for them against Tri-Valley in the Region 5A championship volleyball match Tuesday in Colton.

With the win, Wagner improved to 31-3 and earned a state tournament berth, while Tri-Valley ended its season with a 22-8 record. The Class A state tournament is Nov. 15-17 in Watertown, and this is the fifth straight year Wagner has qualified for state.

Set scores Tuesday night were 18-25, 25-21, 25-18, 14-25, 15-8.

“This was a difficult district and region tournament this year,” said Wagner coach Amy Tyler, whose team defeated Platte-Geddes in five sets in the District 10A championship match. “We knew there wasn’t any time to waste in the fifth set tonight, and the girls came out fast. I like to see that.”

Nicole Weber led Wagner offensively with 13 kills and 13 digs. Gina Soukup recorded 11 kills, Jessa Doom tallied 19 digs, 39 set assists, two blocks and three aces. Sydney Breen led all players with 20 digs. Brooklyn Tolliver added 12 digs.

Tri-Valley’s Allison Cross led all players with 18 kills and added six blocks in the loss.

Andes Central 3, Hanson 1

MENNO — Andes Central (29-3) defeated Hanson(18-8) 3-1 Tuesday night in the Region 6B championship to advance to the state volleyball tournament, which will be held in Mitchell Nov. 15-17.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-19, 26-24, and 25-19.

Kellie Winckler helped lead the Eagles to victory with 19 digs, 12 kills, five blocks and three service aces. Sierra Svatos chipped in with 40 assists, 15 digss two services aces and one kill.

Krista Winckler recorded 16 kills, eight digs and five services aces.

Hanson was led by Kelli Wenande, who recorded eight digs four service aces and two blocks. Kendra Cheeseman tallied 10 assists and six kills, while Kynedi Cheseman added seven kills. Lindsi Dey recorded 16 digs to go along with Kiera Goergen’s nine assist.

Pine Ridge 3, Winner 2

MISSION — Pine Ridge (31-1) defeated Winner (20-10) 3-2 in a five set thriller Tuesday night during the Region 7A championship to advance to the Class A volleyball state tournament.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 15-10.

Winner stats: Cassidy Hanson had 27 kills and 23 digs. Tawny Sherman had 13 kills. Lindsey Calhoon had 18 digs. Sara Husher had three aces and added 22 assists.

James Valley Christian 3,

White Lake 0

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — The White Lake volleyball was defeated by James Valley Christian in the Region 5B tournament Tuesday in Wessington Springs.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-21, 25-22.

The Wolverines ended their season with the loss and finished with a record of 18-14.

No stats were available despite attempts to reach coaches.

Lyman 3, Wall 1

PHILIP — The Lyman volleyball team defeated Wall in four sets in the Region 7B tournament Tuesday in Philip.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15.
