Santa Claus, music, chili and a tree-lighting ceremony will highlight the inaugural Christmas at the Palace on Nov. 19.

The holiday kickoff replaces the Parade of Lights, which was canceled after nine years due to slumping entry numbers and a decline in volunteers.

The holiday fun starts at 4:30 p.m. with the arrival of Santa Claus, who will be on hand through 7 p.m. Free chili will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Cider and cookies also will be served compliments of NorthWestern Energy and Mitchell Main Street & Beyond.

The Mitchell High School show choir, the MHS drumline and Xtreme Cheerleading will perform, and the Mitchell Area Community Theatre and fifth-grade class from L.B. Williams Elementary will sing.

Mayor Ken Tracy will say a few words as the community joins together for a tree lighting ceremony across the street from the Corn Palace at 7 p.m. The tree location has been shifted from its previous spot on Main Street.
