Sioux Falls zoo holding run-off to name baby giraffe

Giraffe-lovers have until Friday to choose between "Gerald" and "Stelten."

SIOUX FALLS (AP) — The Great Plains Zoo is holding a run-off election to name its new baby giraffe.

From now through Friday, people can submit their votes to name the giraffe. The two choices are Gerald or Stelten. The two names were submitted by zoo visitors.

In September, the zoo's 13-year-old giraffe Libby gave birth to a male calf weighing 147 pounds and about 6 feet tall.

Voters are asked to donate at least $1 when they cast their vote. People can vote by visiting the zoo, online at greatzoo.org or by mailing a vote and donation to Great Plains Zoo, 805 S. Kiwanis Ave., Sioux Falls, SD 57104. All proceeds benefit the animals of the zoo, which is a nonprofit organization.
