Area teams play for Class B tourney berths

ALEXANDRIA — The Hanson, Andes Central, White Lake and Lyman volleyball teams each have a shot earning a Class B state tournament berth today.

ALEXANDRIA — The Hanson, Andes Central, White Lake and Lyman volleyball teams each have a shot earning a Class B state tournament berth today.

Each team will play tonight in region tournaments, where the winner advances and the loser’s season comes to an end.

Hanson and Andes Central face off in the Region 6B volleyball tournament at 7 p.m. in Menno.

The Beavers are 19-8 this season, while the Eagles are 28-3. The teams did not meet during the regular season.

Both teams defeated their opponents in straight sets in the district championship matches.

Hanson made it to the state tournament last year and took seventh place. Andes Central is looking to reach its first state tournament since 2005, where it took fifth.

White Lake plays James Valley Christian in the Region 5B tournament at 7 p.m. today in Wessington Springs.

The Wolverines are 21-6 on the year and defeated Corsica/Stickney in the District 10B championship game. White Lake is led by Maria Nightingale, who recorded her 1,000th career kill earlier this season.

JVC (20-6) beat Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in straight sets in the District 9B championship match to reach the region tournament. The Vikings took sixth place in last year’s state tournament.

Lyman plays Wall in the Region 7B tournament at 7 p.m. Central time today in Phillip. The teams did not play one another during the regular season.

The Raiders (15-12) were the No. 5 seed in the District 13B tournament. They defeated Jones County in the championship match to advance to region play.

Anna Flitner has led the Lyman offense with 375 kills this season. Flitner has also led defensively with 407 digs.
