SIOUX FALLS (AP) — The Center for Western Studies on the Augustana College campus in Sioux Falls is wrapping up a five-year effort to raise money for its archives and library, art program and educational exhibits.

The $1.5 million endowment campaign was boosted by a $300,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The media reports that the center has an overall endowment of $7 million and is now in position to enter into talks about acquiring collections including one from the American Indian Culture Research Center at Blue Cloud Abbey near Marvin. The abbey closed in August.

Center Executive Director Harry Thompson says the center is interested in the 40,000 photos, hundreds of taped oral histories, countless books and many pieces of clothing and artifacts unique to the Dakota people.
