Tiffany Ellis, a 2012 graduate of Ball State University’s master’s program in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and linguistics, received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Macedonia, where she is teaching conversation classes at the University Goce Delcev.

The Mitchell native is also volunteering at a local NGO for crisis pregnancy and has begun tutoring at the recently opened Lidija Center, in addition to her own language studies in Macedonian.

She is the daughter of Tom Ellis and Rita Kiner Ellis, also of Mitchell.

While studying TESOL as an undergraduate at Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Ind., Ellis spent three weeks in Skopje, Macedonia, for capstone study.

“I had often hoped to return for a longer period of time,” she said, “and the Fulbright is providing the perfect opportunity to do so.”

While studying at Ball State, Muncie, Ind., Ellis also taught in the Intensive English Institute. Following her Fulbright year, she intends to continue teaching English to non-native speakers at the university level, while also gaining more administrative experience.

“It’s a privilege and honor to be in Macedonia with Fulbright, and I’m excited to see how this year unfolds,” Ellis said, who is maintaining a blog of her year abroad at www.trackingtiffsfootprints.wordpress.com.

The Fulbright program is sponsored by the U.S. State Department and is intended to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and those of more than 155 countries. In 2012 the department awarded approximately 1,700 grants to U.S. students and recent graduates.
