Authorities search for escapee from Yankton jail

32-year-old Kai Hansen was able to open a garage door while he and another inmate were washing cars Sunday night.

YANKTON (AP) — Authorities say a man who escaped from the Yankton County jail does not have a history of violence, but they're cautioning members of the public to be careful if they encounter the man.

Police say 32-year-old Kai Hansen was able to open a garage door while he and another inmate were washing cars Sunday night. Hansen fled on foot but authorities believe he later stole an all-terrain vehicle and then a car. Search dogs eventually lost his trail.

Hanson was in jail on a parole violation stemming from a burglary conviction. His last known address was Sioux Falls.
